As per Schedule 6 of the Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations, the area highlighted in yellow on the map below, identifies the portion of the Detroit River in the Town of LaSalle that is regulated by a speed limit for powered vessels. The speed limit in this highlighted area is 10km/h max.

Section 2(7) of the Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations also specifies a speed limit of 10 km/h max. within 30 meters or 100 feet from shore in the waters of Ontario.

The fine for violating the speed limit on the water is $200 plus a $40 surcharge for a total payable fine of $240.
As per the Small Vessel Regulations – “Careless Operation” reads, “No person shall operate a vessel in a careless manner without due care or without reasonable consideration for other persons.” An operator can be charged with Careless Operation, if, as a result of excess speed, their wash or wake adversely affects a number of water activities such as docks, shoreline and anchorage. You are responsible for any damage your wake causes.

The LaSalle Police thanks you for your cooperation and asks that you please mind your wake. Our officers, along with the OPP and Windsor Police Service will be patrolling the Detroit River throughout the boating season to ensure compliance as well as to ensure everyone’s safety.
